When I wrote the last post regarding Google Input tools, one question which was asked by almost everyone was
" Do we get this for mobile ? "
This sent me on my way to seek answers the same question. And then I stumbled upon something.
It has keyboard for all the following Languages:
The user can type data in different modes.
Out of all these modes, let us restrict our point of interest to the transliteration mode.
So how do we go about using it ?
1. First install the Google Indic Keyboard App from Google Playstore.
2. In your android device, go to Settings -> Language & Input -> Current Keyboard.
3. Set Google Indic Keyboard as the Current Keyboard.
Now you open any application and have a look at the keyboard. It will have two sections.
Also, if you wish to change the Native language to which you wish to transliterate, tap on the second icon in top right portion of the keyboard. (An icon with 4 letters each from a native script in it). Doing that will present a window similar to the one below.

So what is it ?
Google Indic Keyboard is just another Google Keyboard application , but with certain cool features inside. It has keyboard for all the following Languages:
- English
- Assamese
- Bengali
- Gujarati
- Hindi
- Kannada
- Malayalam
- Marathi
- Odia
- Punjabi
- Thamizh
- Telugu
The user can type data in different modes.
- Transliteration mode - Get output in your native language by spelling out the pronunciation using English letters (For example, “namaste“ -> “नमस्ते“.)
- Native keyboard mode - Type directly in native script.
- Handwriting mode (currently available for Hindi only) - Write directly on your phone screen.
- Hinglish mode - If you choose “Hindi” as an input language, the English keyboard will suggest both English and Hinglish terms.
- A section with name abc - For english keyboard.
- A section with a selected other language character - For Transliteration-enabled English keyboard.
If you click on the Help icon ( ? ) you can see a very detailed animation of how to use the keyboard.
Now if you double-tap on the option with the other language character, (in case of the above keyboard - அ ) , you will get a view similar to the following.
Here you have two options to select.
- First option is the transliteration mode.
- Second option is to open the Native keyboard mode.
Also, if you wish to change the Native language to which you wish to transliterate, tap on the second icon in top right portion of the keyboard. (An icon with 4 letters each from a native script in it). Doing that will present a window similar to the one below.
Using this, you can switch to any available native language, to transliterate.
Happy Transliterating...
